Man's cultural leaching and the desert (1830-1930): the transformation of the desert into pampa and of the ‘engaged’ into pampa dweller

Abstract

This article explores on how the man of the desert undergoes a process of dissolution of their culture of origin -'cultural leaching’-, emerging from within a speech, an organization, a dwelling and labor, which under the sun crystallizes a new identity: the panpino (pampa dweller). As the nitre which toured the world fertilizing tired territories, so the pampino’s fame traveled the world: with his solidarity, his sacrifice and his organization was an example for other workers in the country and abroad. The author relates how this social subject called pampino emerged, and goes through the specifications of his labor.
