Abstract
The present article aims to clarify some concepts about local development at a human scale, through a literature review. For that purpose it is divided into two parts: concepts about local development, and local development and its semantics. The first part deals with local development in areas such as etymologic, semantic, spatial, territorial, communitarian, place and landscape. The second part presents estimates and historical data, semantic variations, endogenous and exogenous factors and the meaning of sustainability. The study on human scale is incorporated to the subsequent parts.
